In 1000 Words
How can we interpret and create images worth a 1,000 words? In this semester long project, we examined how imagery can be used to communicate effectively through the interpretation and production of photography. In addition to workshops on particular skills and styles of photography and weekly photographic assignments, students used historical photographs as inspiration creating original historical and contemporary narratives. At the end of the project, students' appreciation for the power of imagery and their ability to use imagery as a means of communication was demonstrated in their creation of individual photographic art portfolios, a final conceptual photograph, and final written narrative.

Historical Photo Analyses and Narratives
Students analyzed photographs related to particular time periods, which were later used as a launching pad for writing historical narratives that incorporated the photograph in some sort of way. Students were presented with a description of the requirements, a graphic organizer for their analysis, planning questions for their narratives, and the opportunity for peer and adult critique of their written work. Below, you will find some examples of the handouts they received and of their final written narratives. (See Attached,

Photographic Workshops & Artistic Portfolios
Each student participated in a series of workshops put on by professional photographers from the San Diego community. In workshops students learned about basic camera functions and photographic features, such as depth of field, use of lighting, etc. to more effectively capture their subject. After each workshop, students completed an assignment. By the end of the semester, each student had a series of photographs that displayed their growth as artists and that represented concepts important to them and the use of skills they developed. The slideshow below shows a sampling of student photographs and portfolios.
