Intersession
Each January, students from HTH engage in a 2-week exploratory class. A range of classes are offered by teachers and provide the opportunity for students to explore something of interest to them in-depth. Some students travel to both international and domestic locations, whereas others take on projects that keep them closer to home, such as ceramics, street art, Shakespeare, fitness, etc.
Foodies Unite!
In this intersession, students explored hot trends in the food world, such as canning, sushi, and food trucks. Students both made and enjoyed a range of foods, as they expanded their palettes. They learned about the artistry involved in crafting delicious food and were able to share their artistry with others.
Puerto Rico & The Dominican Republic - 2013
This year, we traveled with 16 magnificent students to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico for two weeks of cultural exchange and experiential learning (adventure learning too). We started our adventure in Cabarete, Dominican Republic, where we stayed at the Cabarete Surf Camp. There students acclimated to a new country, many their first time out of the U.S. We took day trips to the caves nearby, where students jumped into fresh water pools, to the 27 Falls of Damajagua (quite the adventure), and to the Monkey Jungle, a non-profit, eco-adventure organization where students ziplined and interacted with monkeys at the refuge / rescue that the organization supports and operates. Then, we went to Santo Domingo where we explored the history and museums, attended a baseball game, and ventured to a beach spot up the coast. Halfway through the trip, we ventured (by plane) to Puerto Rico, where we went to El Yunque Rainforest and to Fajardo to kayak and observe the bioluminescent bay (a favorite of many). The last night, we were able to witness the opening festivities to the Festival de San Sebastian, San Juan's biggest annual festival.
Italy 2012
In January of 2012, I traveled with two colleagues and 28 wonderful students ranging in age from 14-18 to Italy. It was an amazing, memorable trip. We started in Florence and traveled to Siena, Venice, Rome, and Pompeii. Traveling abroad as a student, I was impressed by the amazing transformation I underwent. It was exciting to see students get a taste of this type of learning and to experience all of the amazing history, culture, people, food, and sights that Italy has to offer. I'm looking forward to many more trips in the future.
Street Art - 2011
In 2011, I co-taught a two week intersession court on Street Art. Students studied famous street artists and had the opportunity to both discuss street art's development and to create art of their own. Students expressed themselves through stencils, graffiti art, wheat paste, chalk art, and many other artistic forms.
